Mass dancing in Pyongyang

Perhaps one of the most well known images of North Korea: mass dances. Whether it concerns a dance on the streets or a very impressive Arirang Games dance, the Koreans know how to boogie, and boogie in style. A traditional Korean hanbok for the women, and a dress suit for the men.

There’s a very negative view on these mass dances, mostly people claiming the dancing is staged and mandatory. But when I came to one of these dances I could feel and see that these people were really having fun and enjoying themselves. You just can’t fake a human smile. It was easy enough to join in on the fun too, the North Korean men didn’t mind sharing their dance partner with you for a while!
